Lucky she was – this was what she thought, turning the small, dark-green four leaf clover in her tiny and tapering fingers. She had short, petite nails, with a few small bits of humus under them. She looked up to the horizon, a kaleidoscope of white clouds and azure rips of sky.
The clouds ran fast over the emerald green land, so close to the earth that one could think of touching them--and this she did, stretching on the tip of her bare feet, digging a finger in the clouds as they were made of wiped cream or candy floss.
She was a small girl, with copper-coloured hair dancing around her waist in locks and tresses, and eyes green and grey as the colours of her land. Despite her short height, she could easily reach the sky with her fingertips for she was the spirit of that land; she was Ireland itself, and she owned the Irish sky.
Lucky she was to own it and all of them, the sky and the hills and the plain and the coasts, all as green as the fresh grass after the rain. She was equally lucky when the storms came and made the hills grey and dark, only to render them even greener when the sun came out again, riding a giant rainbow.
The wind came and it blew the clouds away, pulling her skirt around her legs, and for a moment the sky was a clear, blue depth. But it didn't take long for it to be filled with new clouds, as they pointed the land with their dark shadows, and everything was green, grey, white and blue again.
Lucky she was to own all these colours, she thought as she sat on the emerald grass.
